Club history
Stichting En Passant was founded in 1995 with the aim of promoting and advancing the game of chess in all its aspects, on a non-commercial and independent basis. Over a drink, the noble game is discussed and played by beginners, advanced players, and experts of all nationalities.
Our premises, located on the corner of Looijerstraat and Nieuwe Molstraat, are known as the Chess Café/Schaakhuis.
Every Saturday evening, we hold a blitz tournament there (3 minutes per person + 2 seconds per move). Everyone is welcome to take part in this tournament; both beginners and experienced chess players are warmly invited. You can register on site up until 20:30.
In 2020, we started playing outdoor chess. On Saturday afternoons between 13:00 and 18:00, everyone is welcome to take a seat at the chess tables. Passers-by can play a game against each other or ask for an explanation of the rules, and can stay as long as they like. When the weather is nice, you can find us in the square opposite Paleis Noordeinde. In rain, storms, or cold weather, we move indoors to Amare (Spuiplein 150).
In addition to chess, we also offer other strategic games at the Café, such as backgammon, Go, Stratego, draughts, and Chinese chess (Xiangqi). Since 2026, visitors have also been playing shogi, or Japanese chess, on Thursday and Friday evenings.
