About Us
Stichting En Passant was founded in 1995 with the goal of promoting and fostering the game of chess in all its facets on an independent, non-commercial basis. While enjoying a drink, the noble game is discussed and played by beginners, intermediate players, and experts of all nationalities.
Our venue on the corner of Looijerstraat and Nieuwe Molstraat is known as the Schaakcafé (Looijerstraat 1, 2512 CK The Hague).
Every Saturday evening, we host a blitz tournament (3 minutes per player + 2 seconds per move). Anyone is welcome to join; beginners and experienced players alike. You can sign up on the spot until 8:30 PM.
In 2020, we started outdoor chess. On Saturday afternoons between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM, anyone can take a seat at the chess tables. Passersby play a game together or ask for instructions. In good weather, you can find us on the square opposite Noordeinde Palace. During rain, storm, or cold weather, we meet inside Amare (Spuiplein 150).
In addition to chess, we offer other strategic games such as backgammon, Go, Stratego, draughts, and Chinese chess. Since 2026, visitors also play shogi (Japanese chess) on Thursday and Friday evenings.
